I only made one drink, but the stories are fun.
A neat concept for a cocktail book...identify a drink for each day of the month, and pair it with a short story. Genius! The Author's concept is to provide a drink for each day of October, and add a short story along with said drink. Guess what? It works. At the start of the book, the author provides a quick synopsis of various "props" if you will that could aide in the presentation of the various drinks. He utilizes the days of October as chapters, giving you a calendar of sorts that you may try a different drink each day leading up to October 31st. Think of it as a advent calendar for Halloween! Each drink is presented first, with a quick blurb that describes the drink, ingredients, instructions, a brief taste profile, and some additional hints. The majority of the drinks are relatively simple to create, and the additions suggested by the author help someone not very familiar with mixing/crafting drinks. Don't mistake "simple" as "not very good". Having tried the majority of drinks listed, I can attest that for the most part they are indeed tasty libations.The short stories that are a part of each drink are a quick read. They are all independent stories...meaning you don't need to start at October 1st to understand what might be happening on October 10th. I found myself skipping over the drinks to get to the different stories along the way. As with any compilation of shorts, there are those that stood out for me and those that, while a nice quick read, were fairly obvious as to what was coming. Among those I enjoyed the most was "The Sea Beast", "The Cleaning Lady" and "Eco-Terror". YMMV. All in all, well worth the price, both for the drink recipes and for the Stories.
