I finally understand how important it is to be a disciple at church, rather than just a member, and to be a missional church rather than an attraction church. The attraction church pretends that the post moderns are still looking for a church to belong to. WRONG! That is church-as-it-used-to-be. Instead, the church needs to find out where God is at work in the community and partner with that work: the missiional church. The book provides excellent examples of our attitudes and misperceptions in the church-as-it-used-to-be. And then it gives hints on how to become a missional church through a process of "Holy Experimenting". He also provides examples on how to develop disciples (as compared to members), using a "Rule of Life" and other discipleship development techniques. I got the least out of the last section of the book, on moving from a consumer culture to "Sacred Partnering", largely because I think our church is doing a pretty good job with it's fellowship efforts and reaching out to others with love. There is one graphic in the Missional Church section that is worth the price of the book. I'll leave it to you to find it.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone. This book is informative and thought provoking. It will make a great group study.
An good look at the state of the state to be in the church
Excellent and helpful insights into church life written by a keen student of congregational life who is also a wise teacher of churches.
