In this book Henry and his big dog, Mudge, enjoy the escapades of fall. They shake together as Henry's mom tells scary Halloween stories and together they endure the Thanksgiving visit from Aunt Sally. These books are a favorite for my reluctant reader. The love between Henry and his dog Mudge is heart-warming.
My daughter loves reading this book and she also enjoys having this book read to her (over and over).Cynthia Rylant is one of our favorite authors. Even in simple, early reader-type books, she has a wayof turning prose into poetry.
My girls love this book! The only thing I didn't love about it is the 3rd story. I didn't love the way he talked about his aunt "eating too much, talking too much" etc. It all comes together in the end of the story, but I didn't love that language.
Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow MoonThis series of stories are sweet and fun. My 4 year old boy enjoys the adventures of this boy and his dog.We like that it is a realistic dog who does doggy things. His "thoughts and feelings" are related by actions in the story. They are peaceful, loving, charming stories. When Mudge lays his big head on Henry's bed at night you just feel the security and love.
Other children's books more memorable with more defined stories and characters than the Henry and Mudge series. Under the Yellow Moon is a fine book to get out of the library, read once and return it, but not good enough to keep. The Olivia books, Paddington the Bear, Eloise, Winnie the Pooh or even Mr. Putter (another Rylant creation) are better series. The language in those books, unlike the Henry and Mudge series, is rich. The characters in those books, as opposed to this book, are three dimensional and inviting. How can anyone forget any of those created people and animals and animals as people? The situations that Paddington or Eloise or Olivia find themselves in are at once ordinary and extraordinary. Not so with the Mudge series. It's a good library book to get out for practicing reading only, then return after one night.
We really enjoy the Henry and Mudge series. They are a nice length and appropriate for both boys and girls. A nice step up from board books.
