Prescription Narcotics provides a most interesting history of narcotic use in the United States and the world, modern and ancient. It traces the use of narcotics to approximately 3 BCE, and the use of opium from shortly after the time of Christ. The history of opium derivatives, from the 1800s until modern history is developed. Interesting, sometimes facinating photos of opium dens in New York, drug addicts. The development of the drug heroin as a cough suppresent, and the abuse of the drug in the 1920s in the United States is considered. Most interesting fact, as well, that in 1900 one-million Americans were addicted to opium. 3 out of 4 were women. That is pretty remarkable considering that the population in American was 76 million in 1900. That means that approximately 1 in 50 women were addicted to opium in 1900. Great photo of American woman smoking opium.Methadone, its use and abuse is also considered, as well as the use of opium derivative pain killers and sedatives, such as Demerol, which is a drug often abused by doctors. That is a sampling of the information found here. Very interesting, worth reading if you are studying the history of drugs, narcotics, opium, heroin, addiction, etc...
