Took this small unimposing book with me on retreat. It set the frame of mind for the entire weekend. Twenty years after his death Fulton Sheen is still the best spiritual advisor for the Roman Catholic in America.
It truly takes a master both of the spirit and of the pen to take the deep mysteries of faith and present them in such a way as to make them accessible to most people. This is what Sheen has done in this book. Taking each of the seven last words of Christ, he has drawn out of them a meditation, expounding on their deep significance, not only then, but moreso now, in our own lives.It's a very short book, useful for a retreat, or perhaps as I did, for meditation during Good Friday.
If you have never read any works by Fulton Sheen, this is a great book to start with, it's very small about 60 pages, but it is packed with references and insights only Fulton Sheen can bring out. He has an amazing writing style, with a love for the Lord very few of us will ever experience. if you like this book i recommend reading his famous work "Life of Christ" which is another great book, it focuses on the life of the Lord from Annunciation to Resurrection...
This is a short pamphlet written by one of the greatest American authors who wrote numerous books about God besides his Emmy award winning television program in the 1950's "Life is Worth Living." The Seven Last Words are the 7 sentences Jesus spoke while dying on the cross. This is a MUST HAVE for the Lenten season or any time of the year. Fulton Sheen writes like a poet in that he touches your heart and your soul so deeply and his descriptions are so beautifully phrased! He writes about the meaning of Christ's messages and what he wanted us to know; the Cross was his last pulpit and the lessons are magnificent. Only God could teach such beautiful, loving words in the throes of his agony. It is short but so full of wisdom. I urge everyone to purchase this pamphlet and read it. It will change you; you will understand even more fully the incredible depth of God's love for all of us.
This booklet was incredibly spiritual and moving for a Lenten journey. My mother always had a book of Bishop Sheen's around the house when we were growing up. He was as important to our family as our parish priest. You will not be disappointed if you chose this.
It is unbelievable that after a brutal beating by humanity that Jesus would still find forgiveness for us! He still spoke with peace in his heart and had the heart to still call us his brothers and sisters. His words are simple and direct, which should make their meaning easy for anyone to understand as examples for us to follow.
The Seven Last Words captured Christ's final hours. I went to a Ecumenical service at an Episcopal Church in Pleasantville, New York on Good Friday and was moved by the five ministers of different denominations. Sheen's writing moved me also.
Sheen always does an excellent job. This book is no exception. You just can't go wrong reading anything that Sheen had written. In all the confusion that the world has today, Sheen helps any Christian see things in a clear, spiritual and intellectual fashion that can only help Christians learn more and understand more of the truth about Jesus. The more you read his works, the more you will want to read his works. The end product, is all about Christ. That being said. It's a win win situation. :)
