Disposable Youth, Racialized Memories, And The Culture Of Cruelty (Framing 21st Century Social Issues)

Facing a crisis unlike that of any other generation, young people are caught between the discourses of consumerism and a powerful crime-control-complex, and are viewed increasingly as commodities or are subjected to the dictates of an ever expanding criminal justice system. Drawing upon critical analyses, biography, and social theory, Disposable Youth explores the current conditions of young people now face within an emerging culture of privatization, insecurity, and commodification and raises some important questions regarding the role that educators, young people, and concerned citizens might play in challenging the plight of young people, while deepening and extending the promise of a better future and a viable democracy.

Giroux truly brings forth an ideology that incorporates the manner by which the current social economic system in our education and regular life are basically assimilating people into disposable commodities without caring of our humanity.

As a "lifelong" educator I believe Henry Giroux's work should be taught at every level of educator training. It is what we know validated by his work and proofs! Excellent work for all people to be positively affected.

We are so quick to write off generations, but whatever we say that they are, is a direct reflection of the conditions we made for them. Giroux examines and discusses the entrapments that youth culture encounters and celebrates the young resistance movements. Youth are not disposable, they are fierce and capable of creating a more equal society.

This book looked new but when I opened it for the read, the pages fell out. I suspect the book wasn't new like the seller said it was or maybe it just got missed in the glue line. I love Henry Giroux. Hes an awesome writer and an even better speaker.

The book used the author's personal experiences and tied it to social situations in which poor youths are disadvantaged by society due to social policy constructions.
