I found the information in this book very helpful, even inspiring. "Making Picture Frames" was a birthday gift a couple of years ago. I find myself referring to it constantly, even today. The topics include making custom wood moldings, wood finishing techniques, and it has about 50 molding profiles for inspiration. His techniques for building up compound frames are interesting and helpful. Perhaps the low point is the chapter on matting. Keep in mind that this book was written way-back-when, and it shows its age. Mr. Banister would have found digital photography very helpful. Not glossy, but very informative. ---An easy read.
I am an artist and woodworker who is recently retired. This means that I have time to paint more, but also means that I have to come up with a lot more frames. The price of custom frams is outrageous and even buying ready made frames gets expensive.So... I have been looking for ideas on making my own frame moulding and using it to frame my paintings. This book is exactly what I needed! It has information on making all types of frames for all types of paintings and photographs. Making mats, cutting glass, cutting and assembling the frames using either pre-made moldings, or your own home-made mouldings. On the pre-made mouldings, it even has suggestions for construction moulding profiles that can be used, so you don't need to buy expensive picture fram mouldings. It even has instruction on finishing techniques. Most of this information is available in other books. What I was have a hard time finding was a book with ideas for making your own moulding shapes using various router bits. This books has LOTS of profiles for you to make. Some of the reviews say that the information in the book is "dated". I totally disagree. Also, the black and white photos have been criticized, but I see no loss of information due to the lack of color. The only dated information is that a radial arm saw is shown, and these have been replaced by chop saws. Also the photo of a chop saw in the book is of an old design. Other than that, I see nothing that i would classify as "dated".In my opinion, the chapter on making your own mouldings is worth the price of the book.
I bought this for my husband because he likes woodworking (and I need frames). He likes this book a lot because it gives him ideas and good tips.I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to make their frames instead of buying cheap, fake wood ones at the store.
A good beginners book for want-to-be wood picture framers. Includes a bonus feature of creating your own designs in the wood frame with the use of a router. Good basic instruction.
I don't know why this little book ever went out of print. It's small, filled with all the information you really need to make a frame (if you have some basic wood working skills) and is an easy read.
My wife took up oil painting, and is quite good. I could see right away I could not afford to have all her pictures (one every two or three days) professionally framed. This book helped me to build our own frames, using standard mouldings.
Making picture frames in wood allows even a senior citizen, like me, to achieve acceptable results. My daughter loves having her pictures framed by me. Saves her money and she says it becomes a family project. I reccomend this book to any beginner.
I am always looking for new ideas in frame making, this one has many profiles and the cutters needed to make them. It's not a big book but it is one of the best I've seen.
