French Artillery And The Gribeauval System: Volume 1: 1786-1815 (Officers And Soldiers Of)

This work presents in detail the uniforms of the foot artillery between 1786 and 1815. Formal in style, and indeed austere, the uniforms illustrated here were the very ones worn by those who participated in during the most crucial and of the Empire. (71 plates including 29 by Ludovic Letrun) An important part of the book is devoted to the detailed description of equipment (artillery, ammunitions, front axle units, forges, etc.). Developed and used by the gunners ever since the reforms of Mr. Gribeauval, his construction tables provide a clear presentation of primary artillery as well as the basic tactics employed by the Army.REVIEWS "... provides an excellent colour reference for modellers as it continues to tackle the colourful uniforms and equipment of the French army around the time of Napoleon. ...really very good references for figure modellers, and this series is steadily building into an excellent collection to keep on your bookshelf.Military Modelling

Probably the best book so far in this series on French Napoleonic uniforms -- best, because it describes and clearly illustrates the sometimes subtle differences between the Gribeauval and An XI systems. The uniforms of French artillery crews are shown too. Readers will have to look elsewhere for uniforms of the artillery train and for the details of how horses were harnessed to the guns. There's also no information here about the tactical employment of the artillery, if that's what you're looking for,

Fully detailed description of the famous Gribeauval standardisation of the French Artillery system. Nice clear line drawings show all the technical ordinance as well as the uuniforms work by the personnel.

I just added all three volumes of the series on French Artillery to my library. These books are, to say the least, the best possible reference currently available on the subject of Revolutionary and First Empire Artillery. Of particular interest was the wonderful coverage of the equipment of the bridging train. Finding specifics on those units has always been difficult. On the negative side, and it is minor, there are a few typos and what seem to be translation errors. One or two of the uniform descriptions seem to be a bit off. Regardless, these books are must have for modelers, uniformologists, reenactors and anyone with even a passing interest in the French Artillery of the period.Add these to your library along with Kevin Kiley's two volumes on the Artillery of the Napoleonic Wars and Stephen Sommerfield, Anthony and Paul Dawson's "Napoleonic Artillery". Do that, and you will have an excellent and accurate set of references to draw upon for any of your historical needs.
