I've read several books in this "Images of War" series; this is the best of them I have read--or viewed since so much of the book is commentary and captions. The writing is excellent and the photos are quite good--I have seen few of them in other books. The sections include Japanese armor in China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific, but note that it is not just Japanese, there are photos and some text on British, American, Australian and Soviet weaponry. Japanese tankettes feature in some books on the Pacific war, but this book makes plain that there was some variety, and that anyway in the circumstances of China where there was little option, machines that would be out of date in Europe were useful. The Japanese had a variety of armored vehicles, including some formidable machines that never saw combat, produced for the anticipated American attack on the home islands. Japanese armor was not much of a problem early in the war save for the "incident" with Soviet forces in Mongolia, although it was a major problem in the August Storm Soviet attack in 1945.An additional factor was the inappropriateness of terrain for use of armor, particularly in China but also in Burma. There was some Japanese armor in the Pacific area of the war, used mostly as a kind of pillbox. There was not much in the way of tank battles of the kind that took place in Africa and Russia. Armor was a Japanese weak spot, although of no great importance given the war environments--save for the confrontations with the Soviets, who did use tanks on a sizable scale. There's also good commentary on American use of armor in the islands, and British in Burma. The book is short but nicely done. The photos are quite good.
