Music Of The Masters For The Master

(Harold Flammer). This unique collection for the church pianist displays the arranging skills of some of today's best keyboard writers. Using a classical theme or genre as the basis for each piece, the composer weds a time-honored hymn to bring these beloved themes into the sanctuary. A variety of new and classic arrangements are included making this a useful and beautiful compilation for pianists everywhere. The counterpoint created between these two musical forms is very compelling. Included in this thoughtful assembly is the writing of Mary McDonald, Cindy Berry, Carolyn Hamlin, Joseph Martin, Alex-Zsolt, Jack Jones, James Michael Stevens and many others. Quotations from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Sibelius, Grieg and other favorites are part of the joy of this book. Sure to be a classic among classics. Don't miss this one!

Let me start out by saying that I’m not a big fan of medleys featuring a hymn paired with a classical work. When they’re done well, the results can be pleasing. But far too often they come off as a poorly done pastiche that doesn’t do justice to the hymn or the classical work. However, this subgenre seems to be popular judging by the number of books that have been published mixing hymns and classical works. The reason I bought this book was not because I loved the concept but because I have become a fan of some of the new arrangers featured in it such as Brad Nix and Pamela M. Robertson. They are among the 13 composers who contributed the 17 arrangements in this book. Of the 17 arrangements, 14 are new and 3 were previously published. Most of these arrangements are better than what I expected. While this book hasn’t won me over, I did enjoy a couple of these blendings of classical and sacred. My favorites from this collection are Lo, How a Rose E're Blooming with Edward To a Wild Rose by Alex-Zsolt and the Prelude on BUNESSAN with "Morning Mood" from Peer Gynt Suite by Shirley Brendlinger. If you’re a fan of this type of arrangement, get this book. Otherwise, this book probably isn’t for you.1) Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us (BRADBURY) with J.S. Bach's Sheep May Safely Graze, arr. by Vicki Tucker Courtney, 3 pages;2) Praise to the Lord Who Reigns Above (AMERSTERDAM) with Mouret's Rondeau from Sinfonie de Fanfares, arr. by Mary McDonald, 4 pages;3) For All the Saints (SINE NOMINE) with J.S. Bach's Toccata in G Major, arr. by Shirley Brendlinger, 4 pages;4) Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (CWM RHONDDA) with Handel's "The Rejoicing" from Music for the Royal Fireworks, arr.
