The story begins in 1822 when Clement Clarke Moore gathered his children around him on Christmas Eve to read them a story that he had written. Cheryl Harness tells the story of the wonderful poem that Mr. Moore had created just for his children.The poem he wrote starts out with Santa's sleigh flying through the skies to the southern plantations and the nine nights of Posada before Christmas. It tells of the preparations being made in the kitchens and then off goes the sleigh to Mexico, where the preparations are told about that country. On goes the sleigh to other countries and customs on Christmas Eve.While the prose in this book is very interesting, the delight is truly in Cheryl Harness's illustrations. This is one of those books where each page must be studied to see all of the wonderful things going on in each country. It's a feast for the eyes and jam packed to the edges of the pages. The colors are rich and vibrant and depictive of the era of 1822. It shows what it might have been like in all the countries Santa and his sleigh visit and leaves the reader and child with a comforting feeling of traditions from long ago being carried through to today.
