Fifties Furniture By Paul McCobb: Directional Designs (Schiffer Book For Collectors)

Today Paul McCobb's furniture and interior designs of the 1950s rank alongside Russell Wright, Gustav Stickley, and Heywood-Wakefield as marked staples in modern design. Paul McCobb's Directional Designs furniture line exhibits the low-cost, functional, and versatile furniture components, storage units, and interiors that earned McCobb the title of America's decorator during the mid-twentieth century. Containing over 100 coordinating room settings, including chairs, sofas, desks, benches, shelves, interiors, and much more, with information on McCobb's achievements and design principles, up-to-date price guide, and index, this book presents one of the backbones of modern design.

This is an OK book, but the title is somewhat misleading to the casual reader. This book deals very specificly with the "Directional Designs" line produced by Paul McCobb - not all of Paul McCobb's "Fifties Furniture"If you are looking for information on the Paul McCobb Planner Group, as I was, you are not going to find it in this book.Apart from that, it has some great pictures of some very high-end furniture.

Very nice reference of Calvin line furnitures. Only B&W photos. No planner group line furnitures covered. If you want to know about Calvin pieces this book is for you.

This book is merely a reprint of a single (yet large) catalog of McCobb's designs for a single manufacturer, however, the line featured is often considered the most sophisticated of his furniture. Another reference that encompasses McCobb's work is needed, but this is the best thing available if you can't find original ephemera.
