My Deaf son loves having a book that talks about sign language and hearing aids, but other than that it almost creates a problem out of nothing. It's more helpful to typical children to understand friends or family members who have a hearing loss... but the instance of a specific event like a party and concerns regarding it... well, it's too specific of an event. Would have liked to have seen 1) better illustration 2) more positive interactions 3) better explanations.Books that address hearing loss are far and few between and this is definitely one of the better ones but not great. Good to have in the collection but not a necessity.
Recently purchased this book for my granddaughter who just began kindergarten. She herself has a hearing loss and has always been the only one who wears hearing aids. This book let's children know some of us wear glasses and some may wear hearing aids but in reality we are all the same. She loved the book...have read it to her over and over..and over!
In New Zealand special needs including Deaf people/ students are being proactive about inclusion in the education system.This story highlights that side of life.
This book is a really lovely read and a bonus that it was in fact illustrated by a deaf artist meaning the sign language that children use in the illustrations are true to life! The story is a really lovely way to introduce all children to the difficulties and experiences deaf children face.
