There is a reason why The Shorter Catechism has endured. It is probably close to perfect in for explaining the life's biggest questions, what every man/woman wants to know:- WHY- WHO- WHAT- HOWWhy am I here?Who is God?What will happen when I die?How can I be right with God?Only Christianity answers these questions. Don't let the size of this fool you. It is meaty, substantial and it will take you some time to go through despite it's pamphlet size. It is not a slick presentation of Christianity that is anecdotal. Instead it seeks to back up everything with the Bible. The Bible never changes and is more than enough to explain the big questions of life. I would encourage this for someone who is trying to figure out why Christianity answers all of lives biggest questions.
We purchased this book to go with the Teaching Hearts, Training Minds catechism book by Starr Meade. While I absolutely love Starr's book, I was a bit disappointed that the basic questions do not include the Scripture proofs (I completely give that book 5 stars, so don't let that deter you from buying!). It's not a huge deal as I can just write them in, but this little book can easily fit into my purse for review when I need it.We actually bought this book probably out of laziness. I can find the Scripture proofs for free on the Internet I'm sure, but for $1.50 with Prime Shipping I figured... hey, why not? I think we may have gotten it free using our Rewards anyway.If you want a simple book with Scripture Proofs of the Shorter Catechism, I recommend this.
This is a really good summary of Christian faith, in brief easy to read and understand statements, and most importantly the statements give all glory to God and exalt Jesus Christ over all. All love to the One who is Love, both from without and within.
I am enjoying reviewing what I learned in Confirmation Class many years ago. I am currently reading a book about the Ten Commandments and this Catechism is referred to in references frequently, so I am able to refer to it and study in more depth what my book is talking about. I would recommend this to anyone who would like to review their own Confirmation of their infant Baptism, dig deeper into Scripture and learn more about the Bible and our Christian Faith.
I had searched for the term, "the purpose of man", knowing it related to our relationship to God, but not knowing specifics. That search led me to the Catechism. I found this, ordered it, & have been most glad to have it. I bought some copies & gave them to family & friends. There is only one note in the book I disagree with, scripturally. I take comfort in the doctrinal statements that were prepared so long ago.
This is a helpful companion to Starr Meade's Training Hearts, Teaching Minds. I prefer using the original language for the questions and answers of the Catechism rather than Meade's modernized language since the authors of the Shorter Catechism chose each word so carefully and diligently to represent truth. We are using these two books to teach and equip our four year old about Truth, which takes a lot of intentional discussions, but is bearing fruit already. And the price of this booklet is so reasonable that it doesn't hurt to try it out for your studies!
Small, nice design, and wonderful for backyard, camp fire question and answer, memorization and explanation. Price is just right to pick up a dozen and have family time over topics that seem to be mainly forgotten.This is a summation of what the Scriptures teach and is for our benefit as we discuss our purpose in life, our duties in life, and how we must treat one another.Each church has their own "confession of faith", whether written or not, this catechism expresses those beliefs in a Q/A format.Good size, quality binding.
We go over one question a week. Easy to use. All the scripture references. It is a small book so if you think you'll lose it get a bigger copy!
