This book presented a simple, direct explanation of deafness. I work with elementary age deaf kids who sign and have cochlear implants, and they loved reading this. The text had a few "hard" words but was within their grasp with a little help.They enjoyed looking at the picture of deaf kids with hearing aids and cochlear implants--"Just like me!" And they enjoyed looking at kids signing and going to speech.This book has a neutral tone. Saying that some deaf kids talk, but not that it is better to talk. Saying that some deaf kids sign, but not that it is better to sign. The book conveyed "This is how it is," more fact than opinion. Exactly what I was looking for.
It is a nice easy introductory book that can help spark good conversation with children about deaf/ hard of hearing friends. Written in a way that is easy for young children to understand but doesn't speak down to older students.
I read this with my severly visually impaired student. He didn't realize that the term blind applied to him. He is new to English. Still he enjoyed the book and had lots of questions, which is what I wanted.
Purchased for my daycare, book has nice pictures and was easy to understand. It had addition information in the back for resources and definitions for some of the words used that are unfamiliar. This book is part of a set of five, I recommend buying all of the set.
This series is excellent for preschool through third grade. It gives a child an opportunity to see the differences and ask questions.
Another great book to have in our classroom library. The book has colored pages with accompanying text. This book is great for preschool to primary level.
These books are great for all children, well written, easy understanding. The back of the book gives resources, facts, and a glossary of what words mean from the story.
Nice pictures, but won't last long in my busy preschool classroom. It's a tiny paperback book!
