The Girl Who Wouldn't Brush Her Hair

This hilarious, over-the-top story is perfect for any little girl who doesn't like to brush her hair. What happens when our heroine neglects her long tresses? Well, one day a mouse comes to live in a particularly tangled lock. Soon after, more mice move in, and the girl's unruly mop is transformed into a marvelous mouse palace complete with secret passageways and a cheese cellar! But as the girl comes to find out, living with more than a hundred mice atop your head isn't always easy. . . ."This tale will send kids the message that they must take care of their tresses." —Booklist "There are parents who will weep with joy at the prospect of a book that may encourage little Susie or Sam to finally brush that mane." —The Bulletin

I purchased this book for a friend whose granddaughter didn't want to brush her hair or let anyone else do it. We loved the book and hoped that the four year old would also. As it turns out, she would prefer to let mice build nests in her hair to brushing it, but the book is adorable (like my friends granddaughter).

My veterinarian has 2 little daughters ... I always give her books at holiday for her girls along with something for her, of course. I love finding unique children's books, with a message. And great illustrations. Got a nice thank you ... hope the girls like this. It's pretty funny, and ties in animals, too. I bet they'll go brush their hair ... after seeing this!!

I bought this book mainly because I loved the illustrations. The artwork is exceptional. Since the little girl it was intended for is not born yet, I cannot comment on the likability of the story! But, I read it, and I liked it, so I think she will too, in a few years. If you are creeped out by mice, you may want to pass on this one.

I give 5 stars to anything that accomplishes what it set out to do and this did just that. This book helped me cure the "no mommy, don't brush my hair..that hurts". Read this book to your child if she doesn't let you comb her hair due to knots. If you have a 2 yr old then you probably know what I'm talking about.

Again, I was faced with a book full of mice! Rodents creep me out in the worst way. But I was determined to read this book as it looked fabulous and I very much enjoyed Bernheimer's, The Lonely Book.In this book, a girl with gloriously thick and long hair refuses to brush her hair. One night the mice begin to move in one by one and make a cozy little nest out of the girl's hair. Before long, problems begin. The mice don't like water so the girl doesn't bathe. She can't sleep because the mice are so noisy and she doesn't want to crush them. This goes on until the final straw...the teacher won't let the little girl bring her baby doll to school because she already has enough friends in her hair. The girl chooses baby doll over the mice and bids farewell. The illustrations in this story are rich, colorful and full of interesting background bits that draw the eye. I wanted to look over every inch of every page. This story brought me back to the days when we spent hours brushing "rats nests" out of my own thick and curly hair. Thankfully it never got so bad that mice moved in. I lost a few things in there occasionally though.I highly recommend this book to all children (except those like me who are afraid of mice). It has a wonderful message about hygiene and it is hilarious good fun.

Hilarious book! Great Illustrations! My 5 year old granddaughter wants to read this book constantly. She used to complain about washing/combing her hair. After reading this book with me she commented "I'm always going to wash and comb my hair now". Then she said "can we read this again"? Her mother is now happy that she never complains about combing her hair. This is a very cute book.

Such a great story! Just fun fun fun! I read this to a group of kids ages 5-10, and they hung on every word and looked closely at every picture! It just captured their imagination, and tickled their funny bone! The main character is the perfect eclectic mix of independent, quirky, self confident, compassionate, and ultimately logical. You feel a little stronger as a person just hearing her story. Great book with fantastic illustrations!

My Granddaughter and I read this book every night prior to bedtime. She loves the story. I can't say that it has helped with the hair brushing, but she absolutely loves the idea of a family of mice living in her hair.
