This is a beautifully written and photographed reference on soldering. I own many jewelry making books, but none compare with the amount of information that is found in this one. Techniques that I have never seen in any other book. The author explains every process in very understandable detail. The book has great projects, and plenty of inspiration to spark creativity! This can be a huge help for someone who has had some basic experience with soldering, but wants to progress to more challenging projects. Also answers many questions on how complex pieces are put together. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to enhance their soldering knowledge, and be inspired. A must for your library!

I've been a practicing metalsmith for about 3 years and probably have every book on the subject of soldering that's been published. The Art of Soldering for Jewelry Makers... is hands-down one of the best. Lots of practical tips and information in a well-written and well-photographed format and the projects, designed to teach/improve one's soldering skills, are beautiful with excellent step-by-step instructions. I would recommend this book to anyone just starting out with a torch and some metal and anyone who is already experienced but wants to improve and/or soak up some valuable tips.

I've been soldering for some time now and didn't think there could be another inspirational book out there, until I found this one...or I should say, it found me. I loved many of the designs if not all in some part. The steps are easy to follow and thorough. If you are a beginner or experienced, I recommend this book.

Although I'll never ascend to the levels of Chanel or Harry Winston in creating jewelry, after working with metals and wire for the past 10 years, I also didn't want to do just "ordinary" soldering and jewelry work either. My goal was and still is to create beautiful jewelry that just a cut above the others--and yes, this is a hobby, I'm never going to be a professional.Enter "The Art of Soldering" by Wing Mun DeVenny, and it's filled that "hole" that has been left by other beginning soldering books. Separated into several sections, Wing Mun covers the basics of solder, flames and torches, and tools, but we also get detailed information on how to begin something I like to call "precision" soldering. Not just putting joints together or slapping one piece of metal onto another, but really working to create, what my husband calls, "jewelry that you would expect in a store." In the second section, the mechanics of soldering is explained. And finally, in the third section, Wing Mun provides great projects that will transform your knowledge, understanding and production to new levels.Of course, no book alone is, in my mind, a substitute for a great class with a good teacher, but this book will certainly direct the average hobbyist toward creating much "higher level" jewelry for presentation to friends, family and customers--if you're so inclined.I would highly recommend this book. I bought it six months ago, and am STILL working through the projects listed in the project section of the book.

I purchased the book in hopes of finding a solution to help me solder better. Wing sets up many different types of soldering situations to combact different soldering problems. I found in her book reasons for problems in soldering a casting, compared to a sheet of metal extremely helpful. She did use words & tools that a novice may not understand to complete a soldering situation. I find it hard sometimes when many different words are used to describe the same tool.

This is a great resource, quite comprehensive guide to tools and techniques with detailed explanations for each. The examples are interesting and unusual. I have several books on soldering, in my opinion this is the best.

Really helpful for even intermediate to advanced jewelers. I have four years of college level metalsmithing education, and I found useful information. Nicely written, clear instructions and beautiful photography.

I hoped for more advanced techniques but didn't find them. This is a book for beginners. The instructions and photos are clear, but if you are an advanced student or an experienced goldsmith, you will not learn much.
