I am a jewelry maker (metalsmith and lampworker) but was never really interested in wire wrapping until I saw the jewelry that Janice Berkbile made. I took one of her workshops a couple of months ago and made a beatiful pendant that I just love. I always get comments on it when I wear it out in public. Anyway, wanting to learn more I pre-ordered her book back in February and I must say that it was worth the wait!This book is loaded with beautiful projects by two artists: Janice Berkbile and Tracy Stanely. The first 25 pages of the book discuss the tools and materials used, and explain the basic techniques in detail. This is then followed by the actual projects. There are 24 projects in the book. Twelve by each artist. The book is just loaded with great photos showing every step of the process. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow.If you are a lampworker and want new ways to show off your beads then you will love this book.There is an 8 page gallery at the end of the book which showcases more of their work. Very inspiring!
I love this book! The pictures are gorgeous... so vivid! Great book for beginners through the most experienced of jewelry makers. There is so much valuable information in their book. It is a must for anyone who loves beads and wire working. Janice and Tracy hit a homerun! This book is the next best thing to taking one of their classes!
I have had the pleasure of taking classes from both Janice and Tracy. This book is a great resource for tips and techniques. Each page is loaded with photos so it's easy to follow along. I have already marked up my copy to make note of all the ideas I plan to incorporate into my designs. If you can't take a class with Janice and Tracy, having this book in your studio is the next best thing. Highly recommended.
This is a wonderful book with clear, concise, step by step instructions. The close up photos of each step are more than helpful. It's like being in a class with Tracy or Janice. I highly reccommend this book.
"Making Wire & Bead Jewelry" is a great way to learn how to make wire and bead jewelry. This book is one of the best I have seen at explaining, and clearly showing (through excellent use of color photos), the techniques needed when working with wire. Beginners and experienced jewelry makers will almost certainly find this book useful. We have been making jewelry for awhile now, so I consider my skill level to be Intermediate to Advanced and did not find anything here that was above my abilityThe book starts out with the Materials, Tools, and Techniques needed to create the 24 projects included in the book. As noted above, these include some of the best instructions and most helpful photos I have seen in any crafting book. I also liked the Gallery included in the back that features some truly inspiring examples of wire and bead jewelry.This is a great addition to my collection, Highly Recommended!CFHNOTE: The publisher provided me a copy of this book to review, but that in way influences my rating or comments.
I will start by saying that wire isn't my first love. Yes, I have taken wire classes and yes I can do it, but...However, after a review of "Making Wire & Bead Jewelry", I might be turned to the metal side of my thinking. I can do many of the projects in this book with the clear instructions that are provided. With the well laid out pages and fun designs, I might just suprise myself (and Janice and Tracy!) with what I can do when I put my mind to it.This book is a must have for your library. It's fun, it's fresh and it's a strong foundation to build your skills.Two thumbs up!
You can't judge a book by it's cover, or by it's title. At first glance I thought that this book was going to be another book full of wire spirals with basic bead dangles. I was not very impressed by the cover but, I opened it up and took a look anyway. I am so glad that I did! As I flipped through the pages and pictures I became more and more excited about the projects. I want to make every piece of jewelry in this book at least twice and wear it all at once, while dancing around a bonfire, on the beach! It's all so, gypsy-fabulous!I have been a long time admirer of Janice Berkebile. I have photos of some of her jewelry on my studio bulletin board. I especially love her wire pods and acorn caps. Both are featured projects in this book. Her Gypsy Wire Pendant, a multi-tiered piece that is coiled, curled, hammered, and dripping in dangles and Bloom, a fabulous flower pendant with wire petals, a focal bead center, and a basket woven back are my two favorite projects.I was not familiar with Tracy Stanley but, I was pleasantly surprised by her designs. She has several coiled and bead bangle bracelet projects. At first glance they may seem like they are the same project. On closer inspection you will see that they are created using methods that are different enough to require separate instructions.The big bonus in this book, in my opinion, is the eight page gallery and the five hundred "How-to" photos! I am a visual person. I like lots of pictures and I like lots of variations. This book offers all of that and more. There is a brief overview on tools and supplies that covers all of the basics required for the projects in the book. Next there is a generous, chapter on techniques. I really appreciate the safety tips and practice guidelines. The book reads like a gentle instructor reminding you to be safe, practice, and enjoy the adventure.
