I received this very pretty book from my sister as a Christmas present. Due to my lifelong interest in firearms she thought I would truly enjoy it. I hope she doesn't read this review because I won't want to hurt her feelings.This is a coffee table book consisting of minimal data but with lots of photographs of highly engraved, gold plated presentation grade firearms. Such highly decorated firearms are not likely ever seen by the average sportsman, law-enforcement officer or military man. Search guns are typically only found in museums, gun safes, displays and private collections. They are not used regularly and no one's life depends upon them. The reason that any particular firearm has achieved fame is because of its innovation, popular use and reliability. However the popular every day bread-and-butter type of firearm is not found in this book.Some of the choices made by the authors about what guns should be included within the 100 are obvious. For example, how could one not include Colt involve revolvers, the 1873 Colt Single Action Army revolver or the Colt 1911 semi automatic pistol? However, the authors clearly make no attempt to be objective, but are clearly demonstrate significant bias towards certain firearms makers. For example, while many consider the Winchester 1873 "the rifle that won the west", many also consider the Marlin 336 to be the best and most popular deer rifle in the world. The fact that the Marlin 336 (the upgraded version of the 1893) and 1894 are still in production after many decades should speak for itself. Most gunsmiths say the Marlins are much simpler designs than the Winchesters, making them more reliable, easier to clean and repair.
