Redefining Financial Freedom: A Gospel-Based Approach To Money

There is no shortage of books providing financial advice and quite a few of those incorporate a Christian perspective. They all tend to start with existing financial practices and apply Biblical principles to what you are already doing. What makes this book different is that it starts with the gospel and then considers the financial implications. The underlying assumption here is that the gospel is Good News rather than Good Advice. That means it is not primarily about finding the right Bible verses to inform you, but rather about connecting with the Good News of Jesus to transform you. What Chad Hamilton provides in this provocative book is an antidote to the false cultural narratives about money. He shows how so many financial problems are due to a misguided search for freedom and helps paint a picture of "what could be" by weaving in stories of imaginative people helping to redeem a broken world. Redefining Financial Freedom provides an inspiring Biblical framework for understanding money. It will change the way you think about work, investing, and generosity.

This is a quick read. At only 151 pages including the notes and acknowledgements, you can really get through it in a hour or two. The chapters are short and to the point, so if you're not able to read the whole thing in one sitting, you can take little bites and savor them. But the chapters do build on one another so don't wait too long in between chapters.I love that the author begins and ends with the bible as the complete and sufficient answer to the topic of financial freedom. While there are many bible based financial gurus around, most seem to come up with a philosophy and then find ways to take the bible and fit it into their plan. Hamilton turns things back to how they should be - start with the bible first and stick with it in every financial decision. The chapters on investing are particularly unique in this regard and I was so happy to read the uncompromising stand the author took in discussing the importance of investing being a sacred responsibility of stewarding God's money - and really researching and knowing where your money is going. Investment means ownership - own those things that honor God. Pretty simple. But I'm getting ahead of myself. This book is divided into three sections. Section 1 focuses on how you get the money you have - how you view the work that you do. Section 2 discusses investing and is a must read for anyone who already has money tied up in funds but hasn't really thought it through using the lens of scripture. Section 3 helps you to think through what your money does to you... how are you using your money to glorify God. Each section is comprised of short, concise chapters. Like I said, an easy read.

Having an active website on the blogosphere has allowed me to connect with other authors, leaders, influencers, and decision makers from a variety of sectors and industries, and from all across the globe. And since my primary focus in life, work, and ministry, is connecting the biblical principles of disciple-making movements and apostolic church planting, with the rapidly expanding mission field that exists in today’s marketplace, I always enjoy connecting with other Kingdom-minded “change agents” and believers who are positively affecting their workplace with their faith and the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. One such acquaintance, is Chad Hamilton, CFP ®, author of the new book, Redefining Financial Freedom: A Gospel-Based Approach to Money (PFI Publishing: Denver, 2016) and Deep Wealth: An Exploration of Money, Meaning, and What Really Matters (PFI Publishing: Denver, 2015). Chad and I share many similar interests, including both having a background in financial services, and a shared understanding of money as a heavenly resource from God, that requires intense responsibility, integrity, and stewardship.Chad’s new book, Redefining Financial Freedom: A Gospel-Based Approach to Money address, what I think, is one of the most critical factors in stewarding finances, namely, the issue of idolatry. Jesus said you can’t serve both God and Mammon (or money, see Matthew 6:24), and in fact, our Lord actually teaches more about money and stewardship than he does even prayer.Jesus knew that we become like what we worship. If we worship the Lord and handle our money in a biblical, God-honoring way, then we are more closely being made into His image. Its Christ’s character formed in us.
