An API platform provides an infrastructure for developing, running and managing APIs. API architecture may refer to the architecture of the API portfolio. The API portfolio contains all APIs of the enterprise and needs to be managed like a product. API portfolio architecture analyzes the functionality of the API and organizes, manages and reuses the APIs. API architecture may refer to the design decisions for a particular API proxy. To document the design decisions, API description languages are used. We explain the use of API description languages (RAML and Swagger) on many examples. I am always a bit suspicious of technical information pushed by product vendors. This book is different. While you won't leverage this text in a vaccum, you will have the confidence to truly speak and evaluate API Solution Architecture like a pro. True to the title, it focuses on the design concepts and solution building blocks. Construction details are for other volumes
I give this 3 stars because1. It has no worked example APIs at all. All theory.2. Feels like an extract from a PhD thesis, not a book.3. It doesn't mention the role of HATEOAS in API architecture.4. It does intelligently breakdown an API Architecture into the Development, Runtime and Engagement platforms. This is a good idea.5. It actually mentions somewhere that an externally facing API is ultimately a company's product. This is an advanced concept for non-technical people.Otherwise, it's a good basic overview of API Architecture, but that's all.
Great book. As a 25 year techie, I enjoy concise and practical technical docs, this is one !
This is purely a theoretical book, it talk about design to an extent, but no implementation details. There are no details on how to break a product down into APIs. Basics are covered well, but advanced concepts seems skipped.
This book is crap. It's simply a general overview light on any substance.
