Book is FULL of inaccurate photos and very, very poor editing. This 2013 edition is mostly straight, word-for-word reprint of the 2007 Standard Catalog of Colt Firearms by Rick Sapp, which had the same mislabeled photographs and had paragraphs of missing text. The 2007 edition did have a price guide for various models and also cited online auction prices from 2007, which would have been helpful information when the 2007 edition was first released. This 2013 second edition edition by James Tarr still has the mislabeled photos and missing text of the earlier version and still cites the 2007 online auction prices. The price guides are unchanged, but market prices have changed from 2007 ... and for some models the changes has been great. If you want a good book about Colt, skip both and 2-007 and 2013 editions. If you feel you want to buy a book called "Standard Catalog of Colt," you can probably buy the old version for a penny.
If you're an avid gun collector or a gun dealer, this is the book for you. Helped me narrow down my Model 1896 (a rare one) much more specifically than internet guesswork. Would definitely buy again. A handy reference guide with all the information you need on Colt firearms in one place, rather than scattered over the internet.
From p.5 "I believe that that the values cited in this book represent the average values that the reader will encounter, not only in internet auctions, but in retail gun shops and at local gun shows."Wow, if only that were true. I could pick up new in box firearms for $1200.00 and sell them for $5000 or more!Granted, a book with a copyright of 2013 tends to use older values prior to printing. Most of the auctions quoted are from 2007. Huh? That's 6 years prior to publication.So, take the quote on p.5 with a huge grain of salt. Prices for many of these pristine Colts have tripled since then.As a reference volume, not a bad book. Would recommend to the Colt collector. Just ignore the pricing.
This is a decent effort and a real contribution, but it really does not come up to the standard of The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson. It lacks detail on many models, and particularly on changes over time to each model. Some of the photos are also inaccurate. It is certainly a worthy addition to a gun library, and will help with information on the few old models you might have, but not the only thing a collector might want..
My desire, was for a compilation of more detail about the individual models and the slight variations in each.This publication is really no more than a broad basic overview of the Colt line. While I can see it being of interst to the novice collector, the same information offerd here is available at much less cost elsewhere, altough maybe not in as slick and polished a format.
The photos and descriptions really help with identification within a production series. Good information for Colt collectors of both revolvers and automatics.
