If you can only afford one metalsmithing book this is the one to get! This is the best introduction to metalsmithing book I have ever found. It is chock full of information to help one get started working with metal. This book is divided into 8 major sections including; materials, surfaces, shaping, joining, casting, stones, mechanisms, and tools. It also includes a handy reference section that I use nearly every time I'm in the shop. The book is full of illustrations, Mr. McCreight is pleasing concise with text. The book seems to have the budget metalsmith in mind offering many low cost methods and tools. The book even includes plans for two home built Jewelry benches, one inexpensive pine and the other a nicer hardwood. I made the inexpensive one 6 or seven years ago while I was in college and still use it today! The book is also thoughtfully bound with a metal spiral wire binding. This allows the book to lie flat on you table while you work. Hats off to Mr. McCreight. Order this one Today

Unlike many art books, this book is very straightforward and cuts out all the BS I have found to be in many Art books....It is the book used in the Jewelry Class here at Western Michigan U. All the examples are well illustrated, and the explanations are excellent. It covers everything from materials to tools and techniques ranging from elementary to advanced. Anyone who wants to get in to Jewelry Metalsmithing should get this book.

I keep this book closeby at all times. Lots of technical data and useful charts. If you work with Jewelry or just create Works of Art out of various metals, this book will help out. Contains just about everything from Agate to Zinc. Nice softcover book too.

I am a little disappointed with this book. I was expecting this to be more like a text book describing how to do various metal working techniques. It is more of a glorified glossary. Explaining terms and giving very broad descriptions. There is very little HOW TO information that I found helpful. Many other reviewers like this book a lot so maybe it's just me, but as a beginner I wanted more instruction and technical tips. It does give formulas and has some step by step instructions, but unfortunately they were for things I am not interested in.

If you are a jeweler, and don't have this book, order it now! If you are just interested in how jewelry is made, this an excellent, simply written book that will eliminate some of the mysteries, and could even get you into making jewelry or other metalsmithing projects as a hobby.Written in simple terms, this convenient to use (spiral bound) book is one of the most easy-to-read, on this subject, you will find.McCreight is a great teacher, and this book, like a lot of his books, proves it.

This is a must-have for the library of anyone interested in jewelry fabrication. All the basic techniques are covered, making it an excellent choice for the beginner, and advanced techniques also are included; McCreight even touches on metallurgy. Explanations and illustrations are very clear. In fact, he makes everything so straightforward and non-intimidating that you find yourself saying, "Sure! I can do that!" A lot of information is packed onto each page, so you get maximum bang for your buck. And finally, the fact that the book is spiral-bound means you don't have to prop it open while you're working--very helpful.

This was the text for my Jewelry One course at art school five years ago, and it was excellent then. Though I've been painting since, I pulled it out last week 'cause I needed to make something- and it all came right back. Amazing amount of basic info, set up to use at the bench where you need it. More impressive now than then. Highly recommended.

This is the 6th. copy of this book I have purchased. I use it in my classes for all level students as their first and final primary guide. Profusely illustrated, and accurately written, I recommend this to beginners and professionals. A must for your reference library.
