Here is a great reason to read this book:"... 36.3 million Americans -- almost 12% of the total population -- have Irish ancestry. That's about nine times the 4.1 million population of Ireland..."Jean LeGrand's book "ST. PATRICK’S DAY - Fun Facts and Photos for All Ages, 8 to 80" is short but guess what... I learned a lot of stuff I never knew about St. Patrick, St. Patrick's Day, and the luck of the Irish. For instance, that originally, the Irish wore the shamrock "... as a symbol of their displeasure with English rule and their pride in their heritage..." I also did not know that each leaf of the clover has a meaning. The book also includes pictures. Absolutely awesome of pic of astronaut Chris Hadfield wearing green in the International Space Station, St. Patrick's Day 2013.There are also a few recipes, in case you want to celebrate next year's St. Patrick's Day in style. If you are one of the 12% of Americans who have Irish roots you should probably read this book.Gisela Hausmann, author & blogger
It's true that almost anywhere one travels in the world, you will find a celebration to honor St. Patrick on March 17.While I was aware of much of this information from my previous research on the subject, this book is a well-written short read on the subject. The author delves into the origin of sainthood, the Irish colors, and the history associated with the shamrock and the leprechaun. I learned about the old Irish legend that Patrick himself used whiskey as a way of teaching a lesson about generosity and that he also started the custom of drinking on his feast day. Le Grand talks about the history and importance of music in the celebrations, and where and how the holiday is celebrated around the world. The section of the book dealing with the true background of Patrick's ancestry and connection with the Catholic Church is fascinating. Readers will enjoy learning about the St. Patrick's Day blessings and curses. The author offers her book Irish Curses and a recipe for Irish Cream Cupcakes as a bonus to those who have purchased this book. So what do you have to lose? You can feed your mind and body at the same time. This book is an excellent choice as a coffee table book or for a teacher using the book as discussion on St. Patrick's Day traditions and culture.
This is a short book of facts, trivia and photos associated with St Patrick's day. What was St Patrick's real name? Was he Irish? Are just some of the questions answered. If you want to learn more about St. Paddy's....not St Patty's Day, then this is a good book for you. I like that it has some interesting facts that as a teacher, I can use. As a special bonus, at the end of the book you can download a book of Irish Curses!
Let's face it, we've been celebrating St Patrick's Day our whole life and how much do we really know about it? This little book has just about everything you'd want to know about the holiday and the customs and why we do the things we do (like why green? - what does that have to do with anything). All the answers are here. I learned quite a few things by reading this book.
If you don't know about St. Patrick's Day or simply aren't that familiar with all its trappings, then this book will provide plenty of answers about this festive holiday. Why green? Why so many parades in the US? Who is St. Patrick? Rich in facts, this is a fun book that anyone will enjoy. Love the photos, too.
This series is going to help me plan the best St Patricks day party...especially the new found trivia I have learned. Looking forward to making some original meals and treats...but most of all creating games using this trivia. I really love all the books in this series!
As a school teacher, I'm always on the lookout for informative books that teach my children and this is the best one I've found on St Patrick's Day. I especially love the international flavour of a traditional Irish celebration.
Being from India, I picked this book to find out what St. Patrick's Day meant. This book not only answered my question but also stayed concise enough to be finished quickly. I think the pictures citing to the relevant facts did the magic.
