I have been using Adobe Illustrator since 1995, but I haven't used this great program as much as I could. Why, you ask? Maybe, I just needed some inspiration and more ideas on how to use it most efficiently. I now have that great inspiration: Adobe Illustrator CS6 On Demand by Steven Johnson, and this book is the best I have bought over the years on Illustrator.Being a professional designer for over 40 years, i love the way the book is design and organized. The contents of the book are simple to complex tasks to perform with real world examples. Every page is in color that begins with simple task introduction and simple numbered step-by-step instructions with screen illustrations. You can access additional resources on the book's Web site. I found the chapters on "Designing for the Web and Devices" and "Working Together with Adobe Programs," especially working with Bridge and Adobe Media Encoder, very beneficial. I highly recommend this book to the beginning Illustrator user and the seasoned professional.

The Illustrations in this book are recycled from CS-something before 6. While it did have some things I didn't know before (which is why I gave it any stars at all), do not buy this book until it really represents the current version

I bought this book for a college class. One-third into the class and have yet to be assigned anything having to do with the book. However, it has been a good reference. Some details are vague, but instructions are clear. This isn't a bad book, but I don't have much to compare it to. As far as recommendations... given the choice, I probably would have picked something else.

Things I like: the fast delivery to my home address. The wonderfully colored illustrations showing Illustrator Screen Shots and the Step-by Step instructions of each Illustrator Topic. The Index of topics at the back-always helpful when learning a new subject. The "Did You Know?" features throughout the book which enhanced each topic in detail.Things I didn't like: It would have been nice to have a Glossary of items discussed in the book, always useful for a new technical subject with all of its' jargon. I also would have liked a more durable, hard cover so the book would last longer. I would have been willing to pay more for a book with accompanying CD or DVD containing extra material or Step-by-Step Illustrator for beginners' Lessons.NOTE: I am a brand-new beginner to Adobe Illustrator CS-6 and the learning curve is STEEP! I am already falling behind in week 7 of a 16 week course;the dreaded Midterm Exam is coming up and I'll wait to then to see if I am passing the course or may have to drop.

O.k. let me start out with...I am a complete beginner. The last time I picked up illustrator was for a class in college, how many years ago? I don't even remember. But this book is CONFUSING. As a beginner it's necessary that each step be outlined. For the most part, the exercises are straight forward, but many of them are missing important -very-small- steps that make all the difference to the success of whatever you're trying to do. I had to watch multiple you-tube videos and search the web CONSTANTLY to find out what I was doing wrong. Also, there are some parts of the book that seem to take for granted you know what they're talking about. The information may be basic and obvious knowledge to people who have worked with ADOBE, or use the computer for art more regularly, but I don't, and got lost and flustered.I guess my final verdict is that I don't think it's very well written. At least for beginners who need a bit more hand-holding, like myself, until they can get the general gist of it. Also found a few grammatical errors.

Brand new to Illustator and purchased this book brand new off the shelf at the local bookstore at $35 + tax. I skimmed through it prior to purchasing it and thought it was a how-to book. Perhaps it's my fault for not reading deeper into the book's pages, but after purchase I discovered while reading it that the book simply explains Illustrator's tools (not processes to create art). If you're a beginner, purchase another of Adobe's books that are geared more towards step-by-step instructions.

Great book. I am not good with computers and found illustrator fairly easy to work with, while using this book. I still had issues figuring out certain things, but a book can only do so much, for such an advanced program.
