I thoroughly enjoyed Mark's writing style as he tells of his methods and shares his expert knowledge in metal detecting at the beach. If you've never been out detecting (or haven't had any success) then I'd strongly encourage you to get this book. I'm amazed at how Mark shares is secrets and methods so openly. Not many of those who really know this craft would share so freely. This book is a real gem. Seriously, learning from this book you can quickly cut months or years from your learning curve and start finding those valuable treasurers. I figure one small find will pay for this book many, many times over and will probably pay for all my equipment pretty quickly, too! Get it - you'll enjoy it.
A lot of these cheaper books on kindle are actually information pamphlets really. this little number has some good ideas and good graphics for beach hunting. like the writer's style and explanations. overpriced at $2.99, would have really liked more information and pics.
I've been into beachcombing with a metal detector for a many years, but this book has given many tips and tricks that help you to find the good stuff! A great guide for beach detectorists of all skill levels!
this is a pretty good book, a short read, I completed it in about an hour or so... but it does tell the basics and a lot of useful info on metal detecting, and the areas of the beach, types of detectors, when/where/how to find the best places to look, the extra stuff that you need to get started, ectit also includes a lot of good pictures, so that you can tell the part of the beach that and what else the author is speaking of, which I really appreciated.it also included many personal stories as well, which was nice to read, and nice to hear about some of the stuff that the author has found ect...I recommend this book to anybody that wants to learn about metal detecting, it was the first book I read on the subject, and found it to be very informative....
There is a lot of treasure to find on the beach. People are careless and lose some of the most valuable things they own. Just remember to buy and use the correct detector for the type of hunting you're going to do. A standard VLF machine is not much good in water-soaked sand, but a pulse machine is very expensive. If you have a VLF, stick to the dry, loose sand. It will work fine then.
His writing is clear and concise and he has obviously spent years metal detection as well doing a lot of reading. Like he said in the preface no metal detecting is allowed on Florida beaches without special permission, so he must have special status to hunt where he did or he did it before restrictions were put in place. In Missouri (there are a number of 'beaches' on some of the lakes and numerous sand bars in the rivers but now almost all of these are 'officially' off limits to metal detecting (as well as all National and State Parks under the 'antiquities law') I know of no more existing metal detecting clubs in Missouri or even dealers as nearly all the distributors have gone online as well as stiff competition from . So unless you know an established 'hunter' or have access to private houses / land you can hunt, its going to be very frustrating finding legal / safe places to search.
The problem I have with this ebook is that it assumes I even care what those who make a hobby of beach combing call beach features. A few pictures showing the best types of spots to look in would have sufficed. What I wanted was a better understanding of how the metal detector works and what is reasonable to expect each model to be capable of, and if that is in this book I haven't gotten to that part yet because of the minute details including that are irrelevant to me. I bought this in part because a son lost a titanium ring on a beach in the dusk and a flashlight was not an adequate help so it was never recovered.
There's a few good hints, the beach diagram is helpful and the book was cheap enough at under $3, but the useful info in here could be boiled down to a 10 page pamphlet fairly easily. Still, if you're new to beach detecting, I recommend it. Just don't expect a 108 page beach hunting textbook.
