A great book for any furniture collector. If you want to see why similar pieces of furniture vary so much in value, this is the book for you. Education for the eyes. I'm beginning to feel like an expert!

If you have any interest at all in Early American Furniture, buy this book! Mr. Sack is one of the most knowledgable experts on this subject. This book shows you the subtle differences in what makes a piece good and what makes a piece great. Having his experise on this subject is invaluable if you have any interest in searching for early American antique furniture. He learned from his father, who had an amazing eye, and Mr. Sack shows you what he has learned. He is reknowned as an expert in the field of Early American Furniture. It is a shame that this book is out of print and that one must spend a great deal for a used copy, but this book is worth every penny. Maybe we will get lucky and he will revise it again, but I would not hold my breath.

It is a wonderful book full of the best examples of Early American furniture and detailing the differences between those examples of the good, the better and the best. Showing the photos side by side you can see the sweep of a really fine curve or carved shell versus the more pedestrian examples - although admittedly even the merely good furniture is truly wonderful. The amount of research represented by the sheer number of photos is really awe inspiring and you get to see them through the finely tuned eye of one of the very best dealers in Early American furniture. Whether you collect the furniture or just want eye candy it's a superb book.

I found this book to be very helpful. Sack points out clearly what features of the furniture contribute most to the value. While these factors will be somewhat different for furniture from England or other countries, it is an excellent guide to American furniture, and a good base of knowledge from which to begin looking at other antiques. While some reviewers have complained about the black and white photos, I didn't find this to be a significant detriment for me. Had all the photos been in color, I think the book would have been prohibitively expensive.

This book will astound even the highest skilled wood workers. The ability to see the quality aspects of such important pieces of period furniture is of great value to all wood workers.It is astounding that one can now buy a used copy of this precious publication for under $10. Buy one, study it and become educated on good, better, best.Everything in life can be viewed through the positive descriptions written in this book. Absolutely wonderful book that you'll want to leave to someone in your will.
