The Complete Photo Guide to Making Metal Jewelry is a well organized, concise and accurate beginning jewelry making book with well referenced technique lessons, clear accurate photographic descriptions of processes, and step by step projects for students wishing to immediately begin making jewelry. This book initially appears to be written for the beginner but quickly touches on more advanced techniques without overwhelming the student yet injecting the reader with advanced potential. Design is often driven by technique and all the techniques and processes in this book are explained clearly and well represented with accurate photographic images. My students could review a technique from the book and begin making object immediately after reviewing a single chapter.I personally appreciated the many references in each technique lesson to the important charts and tables found in the books appendix. These references are printed in clear big bold fonts and save time and clarify nuances in technique. A critical review of this book may find that Mr. Sartins book does not give any suggestions to the beginning student on how to organize and layout a home or commercial studio and some of the images found throughout the book could be more inspirational. These small details that do not detract from the " Complete Photo Guide to Making Metal Jewelry", as a impressive instructional tool.......Denver Artist/Metalsmith IraSherman

I've been looking for a good instructional manual on how to make jewelry but they seem to be either too simple or way too technical, this book for me has filled that void. Simply put the instructions are clear and straight to the point. Each step is outlined and easy to follow. The book is divided in a logical progression from basic skills and ending with much more complex projects. Looking at the progression from simple skills to more complex skills, does not make the learning process intimidating, but fun and a great set of skills to obtain. This is not to mention that one will have some really great jewelry as well at the completion of the projects. The photos are a great help in showing each step of the process/project. And they highlight the subtle nuances to each technique. Another aspect that I really like about the book is that each project has a list of the tools and materials one will need to complete the project. The author eludes to a the fact that there are a lot more techniques that are not presented in this book I hope he is working on an advanced edition!I would recommend this book for anyone that wants to learn how to do something more than string beads or glue gems into pre-made settings.

I received this book a few days ago and have learned so much already. John's book mirrors his jewelry - thoughtful, refined, and well-executed. The photography is excellent as is the instruction. I especially enjoyed the section covering how to make your own dapping block for unusual shapes - something I hadn't considered before. I have been studying metalsmithing via books and a handful of classes over the past five years, and this book covers material I would expect to learn in a college setting more so than in a hobbyist-type class. I have been impressed with the breadth of techniques covered - the basics like texturing and soldering are there - yet his also manages to include anticlastic and synclastic forming, which most books don't. My favorite part of the entire book was how to work a rod into a taper, a technique I had not seen in a jewelry making book before. I've read a lot of jewelry-making books! I would highly recommend this comprehensive and easy to follow book to anyone serious about learning metal arts.

I recently received my copy of the book and immediately sat down to read it, then re-read it and re-read it. Seems as though every time I do I find more and more helpful information. All the projects are very easy to follow and I appreciate the subtle safety reminders with each project. My favorite project is the Overlay project and look forward to using that in my own work. The back of the book is packed with great reference and conversion charts that come in very handy.

John Sartin's The Complete Photo Guide to Making Metal Jewelry is beautifully and meticulously created, just like his inspiring jewelry collections. Sartin carefully explains and photographs steps for the most important jewelry-making techniques, which can be utilized by beginners and advanced jewelers alike. His frequent safety precautions and helpful informational charts and diagrams allow for a comprehensive learning experience. Detailed material lists enable successful fabrication of each project laid out in the book. In the gallery section, Sartin has gathered beautiful relevant pieces which inspire and challenge, as does his entire book.

The visual support for the ideas shared in this wonderful guide, allows for the reader/viewer to follow the instruction clearly in a multistep presentation. So often, a book will present an idea or concept clearly in text, yet the author does not allow for the beginning or intermediate reader to "see" what is often lost in translation. Pictures are clearly worth thousands of words in this book. It is visually uncomplicated, clear in presentation and a wonderful guide both as a reference and a page by page read.Highly recommended. Thank you John!
