Billed by implication as a book for beginners, this book was anything but. I did not find the material to be organized in a manner that would guide me through progressive levels of difficulty. In addition, the book seemed to contain excessive verbiage that is unnecessarily time-consuming and of little actual help. Once I discovered wpbeginner.com, I put this book aside and read the free "Beginners Guide," which also features video tutorials. I was able to complete the guide in one evening and afterward had a good command of the processes I needed to create my wordpress.org site.
This book is aimed at people that are new to Wordpress and are looking to setup their own blog or website that runs on this software. I've dabbled with Wordpress a bit in the past but I never explored it in-depth or at an advanced level. There are many topics in this book that were new and unfamiliar to me and this book works well as a guide to these topics. There is a very wide range of topics covered from the very beginning steps of choosing a host and downloading and installing the software all the way to more advanced concepts such as SEO(Search Engine Optimization) and advanced editing of configuration files and code. This book does a good job at serving as a wide overview of these many topics and as a checklist to get you headed into the right direction of what to do next as you're creating your Wordpress site.This book may be a "Dummies" titled book but to be able to follow along, this book requires the reader to already be familiar with various internet technologies, terminology, and common practices. I would not recommend this book to those that do not consider themselves at least a bit of a "techie". This book would be great for the more tech savvy and also those that are looking to refresh their knowledge of Wordpress or to fill in some gaps in understanding. Overall the book usually does a good job at explaining topics and the steps involved but there are some instances where it's a bit confusing and doesn't get cleared up satisfactorily. It would probably be best to use this book as a resource along with others including searching on the internet for more specific or unclear points.I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
First I must say I love for dummies books! They simplify information that would otherwise make my head explode! I am a scientist, put me in a lab or hospital and I am at home, however, computers and webpages and I am lost!WordPress for Dummies is a great reference guide in managing and maintaining your WordPress website. This book provides a detailed run-through in helping with your self installed/hosted version of WordPress website You will learn to set up your WordPress.org account, choose a host and much more. It was interesting learning about the different versions of WordPress...hosting, self-hosting. With WordPress for Dummies you will learn to create a blog to suit your needs, from installing and setting it up, to adding files and plug-ins to customize it. All in all, I am pleased with all the tips this book provided and the visuals that made it easier to understand.I do feel that I, personally, will need to read this book again and definitely use it as a reference tool but it did give me the knowledge to begin confidently. Wordpress can be very overwhelming but once you know it ,it is the best thing ever. Being a blogger ,I am constantly changing layout on my blog , and i need to know how to do it. this book Wordpress for dummies is for newbies as well as pros. it is explained in easy english and every chapter has been touched in detail, from setting up pages to the kind of template I like or what will suit my niche, everything is explained in Wordpress for dummies .It is a pretty thick book and it explains in detail with lot of pictures and tips.I highly recommend this book.I was provided this book for free in return for my honest opinion.
Yes I have some computer background... more than most. I do repair computers, virus clean, and all that techy stuff, but I am lost to webpages.I thought that the book flowed very well and covered a vast amount of information that has been just out of my grip. From hosting, themes, plugins, and everything in between. I love the tips, and that has always been my favorite part of the dummies collections.I recently started blogging about 6 months ago as a product reviewer, wordpress was too complicated for me at the time, so I went with blogspot. I received my WordPress for dummies paperback book in exchange for my unbiased opinion. I have blogged with wordpress here and there but never really knew much about it or customization of my blog with wordpress. With this paperback I have gained more knowledge of wordpress and it's capabilities. The book is informative and features diagrams showing examples of what it's teaching. I like that as I'm more of a visual and hands on learner and this feature in the book has helped me understand better than if I were just reading words. I have not applied any of the new techniques I have read about in this book however I plan to try different ones and better my blog and maybe even start a Web page again only this time through wordpress.
