Caimin Jones' new book, Wordpress Websites Step-by-Step offers the reader great value for money. I operate several Wordpress websites and know my way around the service. Although this book is clearly geared to novice users, I learned enough reading this book to make it well worth the money. I'll be implementing what I learned this week.Caimin's short book is one of the few available right now that is written for the current version of Wordpress. The folks at WP are constantly upgrading their service and many of the other guides are now quite out of date. This book takes you thru the steps necessary to set up a Wordpress.org website. It is not exhaustive in describing everything that WP can do, but by the time you have gone through this book, you will have a professional and secure website. My reservations about the book are minor. I don't use the URL registration service or web hosting services that the author recommends. There are other options, and those aren't discussed. My other reservation is that the book doesn't discuss website design in any way. While using WP's themes makes much of that mute, there are some key concepts about what kind of data goes where and why that would have made this book even better. But, the book does exactly what it says in the title and for the price, this book is awesome.
The myth of WordPress is that anyone can make a great WordPress website in minutes with no training. That isn't true. This book is what you need to get started. The book -- available only on Kindle -- contains all the basics you need to know, from finding a domain name and web host to installing the software, to setting up a sidebar and choosing some plugins, with a special bonus chapter on getting people to visit your website. I like the fact that a lot of things that get overlooked are covered: how to log in to the admin section of your website, how to keep your site secure, how to choose a domain name. No basic issue is overlooked. Each chapter is clearly written, with step by step instructions and plenty of screenshots. It's up to date and practical, and should be comfortable reading for people with no tech background. This book is not designed for experienced users, but many WordPress users will find tidbits in here that are new to them, and at the price, there's no reason to hesitate. Chances are good that all WP users will find a new resource, a great plugin they've never tried, or a reminder of best practices they've gotten lazy about.
I'm a little disappointed. Unless I'm doing something very wrong, this book must have been written for an older version of WordPress. There are a number of things that just aren't matching up. It has been helpful but I'm glad I didn't pay much for it.
I decided to design a website because I've been blogging with Blogger for some time. I registered the domain, got the hosting set up, installed Word Press, bought and installed a template....then stared at the screen for 15 minutes....I tried a little navigating around and realized I was in BIG trouble. I looked for "Word Press for Dummies" on .com and saw that this book, WordPress Websites Step-by-Step" had much better reviews, so I downloaded and read it this afternoon. WOW!! I'm getting ready to jump into building my site now, and I CAN DO IT! If I run into trouble, Caimin gave me all the resources I'll need to get what I need. Thank you! Awesome!
I started blogging in 2009 and switched over to Wordpress in 2010. I found several books, ebooks and online guides to help me with the transition, but nothing compares to Wordpress Websites Step by Step. Caimin Jones takes you from selecting a domain and host server, to setting up your Wordpress site, choosing a design, and installing plugins and blogging away.Caimin doesn’t forget about SEO and included a frequently asked questions / trouble shooting section. My plan was to glance through the book, but I found myself reading every word in awe that something like this exists, now, 3 years after I needed it.And like all things blogging, I learned something about Wordpress, because Caimin is teaching us from the latest version.I will be recommending this to all the readers of my Blogging in My Pajamas newsletter.~ Kimberly, Professional Blogger, Keep the Tail Wagging
Filled with straightforward and interestingly easy to use steps, WordPress Websites Step-by-Step is really a step by step guide that is much like what you would get in setting up a connection or program on your computer, but with a ton of simple to use steps and ideas to save you money and even time in getting what you want done.If you are interested in setting up a blog or a simple to use website, or even something more complicated, once you have your concept in mind and a design for your site, this book will guide you in getting it done. I recommend having a dual screen set up to follow the procedures on one screen and performing the actions on another. I also recommend reading the sections of setting up a website and choosing a web service before performing the creation of your website or blog.In our time of needing extra money flow, I think Caimin Jones has nailed the simple way to get publishing and linking your site and additional add-ons that can start to get you noticed. I have started and stopped on this process a couple of times, but this step by step guide makes it so easy and for the first time made it easily understood that creating a website/blog is simple and cost effective. All the best in applying WordPress Websites Step-by-Step. Look forward to hearing any comments along the way.
